Cardiogenic shock is a life-threatening condition characterized by cardiac pump dysfunction. When conventional treatments fail, knowing what type of mechanical circulatory support is indicated remains a challenge for providers. This session provides an expert review of mechanical circulatory support for right- and left-sided heart failure in the management of refractory cardiogenic shock.

Objectives

  • Discuss diagnosis and management of cardiogenic shock and its implications toward utilization of mechanical circulatory support.
  • Describe the use of for IABP, TandemHeart, Impella, CentriMag and ECMO to support cardiovascular function.
  • Identify hemodynamic changes associated with RV, LV and biventricular shock and apply best practice guidelines for mechanical support.
