Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

Nurses who maintain vigilance for aberrant conditions of the GI tract are formidable foes to adversities accompanying these illnesses. This session takes a high-level approach to life-threatening GI issues of intestinal ischemia/infarction, ileus, obstruction and perforation as well as severe biliary infection. Attendees learn clinical clues to aid in the recognition of true GI issues. Techniques of rapid assessment and interventions for patients with these dangerous conditions are explored.

Objectives

  • Examine incidence and etiology of GI obstruction and perforation with intraabdominal sepsis, GI ischemia and infectious biliary disorders.
  • Analyze evaluation and management of patients with intestinal ischemia, obstruction/perforation with sepsis and severe biliary infections.
  • Consider significant symptoms of severe GI illness within the context of related anatomy and apply interventions to case-based scenarios.
