Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

Post cardiac surgery patients are prone to cardiac dysrhythmias. Managing the pacemaker device is an essential skill to master as the nurse assists their patients on the road to recovery. This is an intermediate-level discussion of how the nurse may utilize the pacemaker device to achieve optimum patient outcomes. The nurse uses the interactive polling tool to react to scenarios related to common dilemmas encountered with pacemakers.

Objectives

  • Identify the components of the cardiac conduction pathway and correlate how rhythm and rate affects cardiac output.
  • Explain how pacemakers sense the native rhythm and how the device inhibits itself or actively paces the heart based on this algorithm.
  • Analyze the various pacemaker malfunctions and provide the appropriate pacemaker intervention to correct the anomaly.
