Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

Demand for procedural sedation has risen significantly resulting in challenges for the procedural nurse: complex procedures and increasing patient acuity. This intermediate session details priorities of nursing care and regulatory requirements for procedural sedation in procedural areas, emergency rooms and critical care units: pre-sedation assessment, procedural patient monitoring, medication administration aligned to pain and sedation assessments, postprocedure care and discharge criteria. Pharmacology content = 50%.

Objectives

  • Describe the synergistic effect of benzodiazepines and opiates administered in the procedural sedation setting.
  • Discuss the role of capnography in early identification of deeper than intended level of sedation
  • Explain patient monitoring requirements during procedural sedation.
