Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

Patient and family engagement in care improves crucial clinical outcomes during high-acuity illness. However, partnering with patients and families often strains the resources of nurses on short-staffed units. In this foundational session, participants analyze a video case study, design realistic engagement strategies and explore ways to balance patient and family needs. Attendees gain communication tips and timely, evidence-based approaches to support patient/family engagement.

Objectives

  • Examine trends and research evidence on the benefits, barriers and challenges to patient and family engagement during high-acuity illness.
  • Formulate realistic, evidence-based innovative strategies for partnering with patients and families to ease workload strain.
  • Evaluate specific family challenges, nursing interventions, and measurable outcomes from the perspective of clinical nurses and managers.
