Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

Although often thought of as an illness of the past, toxic shock syndrome remains a rare but deadly pathology today. Timely recognition and treatment is a priority. During this intermediate-level session, we discuss the presentation, pathophysiology, diagnosis and management of patients presenting with toxic shock syndrome. A series of updated case studies stimulates curiosity and engages critical thinking in these atypical patient presentations.

Objectives

  • Employ knowledge of the bacterial agents commonly implicated in development of toxic shock syndrome.
  • Analyze case studies to identify the most likely etiologies of toxic shock syndrome in select patients.
  • Develop a nursing care plan including diagnostic and treatment modalities to restore health in patients with toxic shock syndrome.
