ICU nurses must stay well informed on the latest research and practice standards in caring for ARDS patients. ARDS survivors experience a high prevalence of cognitive impairment as well as diminished functional status and quality of life, often persisting months after discharge. This presentation highlights evidence-based treatment strategies for ARDS, describe post-intensive care syndrome and outline the ICU Liberation Bundle elements utilizing a case scenario and interactive polling.

Objectives

  • Define ARDS and review historical iterations of ARDS criteria.
  • Review the pathophysiology of ARDS, including differences in COVID-19 related ARDS.
  • Describe current evidenced-based treatment strategies and consider the impact of ARDS on survivors.
