Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

The skin is the largest organ, yet it is also the most neglected. The presentation assists with fundamental information to reduce gaps in knowledge and provide tips and best practices for skin assessment techniques and management of skin damage in varying skin tones across the lifespan. Medical curriculum and education on skin assessment of diverse skin tones is brief with superficial images, language and descriptors. Nurses often are confused by how they missed the early subtle signs of skin damage.

Objectives

  • Explain practice guidance on accurately assessing and managing skin damage in varying skin tones.
  • Identify, compare and contrast the presentation of wound and skin damage in varying skin tones.
  • Discuss strategies and tactics to expand professional development to meet the goals of care through diversity, equity and inclusion.
