Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

ICU nurses care for critically ill patients at the boundary between life and death in high stress, high stakes environments with complex moral and ethical dimensions to the care. If nurses are involved with actions that violate their moral obligations, they may develop moral injury. This session describes the results of a cross-sectional survey study which examined the relationships between moral injury, moral resilience, and the work environment and discuss implications for practice.

Objectives

  • Describe potentially morally injurious events in critical care nursing practice.
  • Explain the relationships between moral injury, moral resilience and the healthy work environment.
  • Discuss how moral resilience may bolster nurses to build healthier work environments.
