Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

Linked to AACN’s newly published Staffing Standards for Adult Critical Care, the facilitator describes the Sentara Patient Acuity Nursing Tool (PANT) which is an exemplar for implementing those standards. PANT was developed collaboratively with direct care nurses, leaders and information technology experts. The iterative testing and refinement of PANT, implementation across a range of clinical settings, and application to impact patient assignment and staffing grids is described.

  • Describe key steps in developing a scoring tool to support staffing and patient assignment decisions.
  • Identify how electronic health record documentation can generate objective measures of nursing workload.
  • Discuss the application of acuity-based staffing tools in their own work environment (Sentara Health).
