Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

This session begins with a short description of AACN’s newly published Staffing Standards for Adult Critical Care. Two experts then present their work on staffing. Dr. McHugh participated in the Nurse Staffing Task Force and shares the existing evidence related to numeric staffing standards, including policies which establish minimum nurse-to-patient ratios. Dr. Blake participated in the workgroup that created the AACN Staffing Standards and provides her experience as a nurse leader in establishing and supporting unit-level staffing standards, specifically criteria for 1:1 assignment. Both presenters discuss the complexity of ratio legislation and the known and potential outcomes.

Objectives

  • Describe the evidence regarding ratio-based staffing standards and their impact on patients and nurses.
  • Identify policies that could effectively support the implementation of staffing standards.
  • Discuss implementation of staffing standards in their own work environment.
