Activity Summary

Required reading for all learners: Implicit Bias impacts patient outcomes

Do you ever reach the end of orientation, and wonder if the nurse is ready for more independent practice in your unit? This session defines a new national standard for orienting nurses new to the ICU or PCU, focusing on core competencies for safe practice and decreasing the orientee’s cognitive load. Results from beta testing this approach with various ICU and PCUs across the country is shared. Outcomes include the orientee's and unit leaders' confidence in the nurse’s readiness for practice, and provide criteria to help coach a few individuals to seek a different practice area.

Objectives

  • Assess the effectiveness of their current orientation process to evaluate initial nurse competence.
  • Outline a plan to improve their orientation process with a focus on overall competence and balancing the orientee’s cognitive load.
  • Identify outcomes measures that facilitate evaluation of the effectiveness of orientation process revision.
