Activity Summary

The purpose of this advanced session is to review current evidence-based practice for airway management of patients with acute respiratory failure. A stepwise approach is described for choosing the most appropriate airway management technique while using the least invasive modality. The methods of airway management we describe include the LMA, high-flow nasal cannula and CPAP/BiPAP. For more seriously ill patients, we describe best practices in intubation, including head-up intubation methods. For the long-term patient, we describe when a tracheostomy is appropriate. Pharmacology content = 10%

Objectives

  • Describe an evidence-based approach to airway management in acutely ill patients with respiratory failure.
  • List at least three minimally invasive techniques to provide airway/respiratory support for appropriate patient populations.
  • Discuss when intubation is appropriate and describe optimal intubation techniques.
