Activity Summary

Bleeding due to anticoagulants is a major cause of morbidity and mortality. Use of anticoagulants is increasing due to the aging population. Understanding both the anticoagulant and its respective reversal agent is essential for making informed decisions. Management of bleeding patients can be challenging due to the lack of available coagulation tests, increasing numbers of approved medications and the prothrombotic properties of reversal agents. Join this session to learn how to identify which bleeds require treatment, distinguish between reversal agents and select appropriate reversal treatment. Pharmacology content = 90%

Objectives

  • Recognize indications and considerations for prescribing different anticoagulants.
  • Review reversal methods of anticoagulants and antiplatelets.
  • Describe uses and monitoring parameters, and differentiate between hemostatic medications.
