Activity Summary

Sepsis, an elusive, costly syndrome, is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity globally. Twenty years of evidence suggests nurses working remotely can use sepsis screening and documentation tools to promote safer, more timely care of sepsis patients. This session uncovers how APRNs and nurse leaders can extend the practice of expert nurses to effectively and efficiently conduct sepsis surveillance on large populations across diverse settings and geographical boundaries.

Objectives

  • Describe why many sepsis programs are difficult to execute, expensive, ineffective, and unsustainable.
  • Review two decades of innovative staffing models and use of machine learning to enhance identification and timely treatment of sepsis.
  • Examine the effectiveness of sepsis surveillance on bundle adherence, improved patient outcomes, and nursing workforce efficiency.
