Activity Summary

Critical illness can spark highly charged emotions and difficult situations from the perspective of the patient, family and healthcare team. How these situations are managed can make a difference in patient outcomes, patient or family satisfaction and staff safety and retention. In this foundational session, participants build a toolkit of skills necessary to successfully navigate these pivotal moments. Communication methods, support techniques and practical tools are explored using visual aids and case studies.

  • Analyze the evidence and underlying dynamics related to effectively communicating with patients and families during critical illness.
  • Identify principles and guidelines for partnering with patients and families during stressful illness experiences.
  • Develop highly effective strategies for managing common challenges that high-acuity nurses face during patient and family interactions.
