Activity Summary

Vigilant nursing care is imperative to the multidisciplinary success of a thoracic surgery program. Patients undergoing thoracic surgery are a unique specialty population; nurses must be prepared with a solid foundation for practice. A team of APRNs at a high-volume thoracic surgery center presents content from their specialty course. A lecture and case study are used to review thoracic surgeries, incisions, equipment and potential postoperative complications to provide attendees evidence-based practices for the postoperative thoracic surgery patient.

Objectives

  • Describe surgical options for thoracic diseases, hiatal hernia, esophageal motility disorders, lung cancers and esophageal cancers.
  • Differentiate the common surgical tubes/drains used in general thoracic surgery, expected care and what should be documented.
  • Identify potential postoperative complications associated with thoracic surgery and/or procedures.
