Activity Summary

Adults 65 years of age and older make up the fastest growing segment of the population in the United States. Traumatic injury in older adults is also increasing. In this session, we review the pathophysiological changes that come with aging and how they apply to trauma in the older adult. Best practices and management considerations for the older adult trauma patient are also discussed, including the 2023 American College of Surgeons updated trauma standards. Audience members have the opportunity to apply to this information through an interactive case study. Pharmacology content = 10%

  • Describe pathophysiological changes related to aging in the context of geriatric trauma.
  • Identify factors contributing to increased incidence and worse outcomes in the geriatric trauma population.
  • Apply current best practices in the management of the geriatric trauma patient.
