Activity Summary

In-hospital arrest survival is stagnant at 23% vs cardiac surgical patients who can survive 65-87% of arrests when providers are trained in specialized protocols. The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) advocates hospital training to achieve confidence and competence in six roles essential to a timely and coordinated resternotomy. The Joint Commission mandates such training. Attendees learn essential clinical skills, as well as how to tailor protocols and training needs to their local environment, within STS and regulatory requirements. Effective training models suited to a range of organizations are presented.

Objectives

  • Discuss evidence-based guidelines and regulatory requirements for training the specialized management of cardiac surgical arrests.
  • Compare and contrast training models and options for simulation that facilitate a coordinated response to resternotomy in the ICU.
  • Identify key steps to implement a local resternotomy protocol aligned with STS and monitor its impact to comply with regulatory standards.
