Activity Summary

There is a substantial history of GLP-1 agonists as antidiabetic medications, but in the last 3 years they have become extremely popular and controversial in their use as weight-loss agents. While for the most part GLP-1 agonists are very safe, there are a few specific complications seen with their use. However, those complications are not nearly as common as the media has led the public to believe. In this presentation we discuss the mechanism of action of GLP-1 agonists, why they are so effective for weight loss and diabetes and the side effects and complications for which to monitor. Additionally, we discuss important elements of patient education, newer trends in off-label use, potential novel uses for GLP-1 agonists and the safety concerns with the use of compounding pharmacies. During the last part of the presentation, case studies are utilized to review the foundational knowledge acute and critical care nurses need to know to safely care for their patients taking GLP-1 agonist medications.
