Activity Summary

In the United States, roughly 2,000 people develop acute liver failure annually; 4.5 million people are living with chronic liver disease. This intermediate session offers an overview of the pathophysiology and management of the acute and critically ill patient with acute liver failure, decompensated cirrhosis and acute-on-chronic liver failure. Moral issues and distress patients, families and caregivers encounter when caring for patients with liver failure in the critical care environment are explored. Polling technology is used to engage exam studies. Pharmacology content = 60%

  • Analyze the pathophysiology of acute, acute-on-chronic, and chronic liver diseases.
  • Assess and manage patients with acute, chronic and acute-on-chronic liver disease, including medications and extracorporeal liver support.
  • Describe the ethical concerns of caring for patients with acute and chronic liver disease.
