Activity Summary

Many bedside ICU/PCU nurses believe palliative care should be an integral part of their patients' care. However, effectively communicating the essence of palliative care—not only to our patients and their families but also to our colleagues—without letting emotions dominate the conversation can be a challenge. This session helps you understand the common definitions, differences, and similarities between hospice and palliative care. Additionally, it addresses how to overcome barriers when requesting a palliative care consult or transitioning a patient to hospice care.

Objectives

  • Describe common abbreviations and initialisms that are used within hospice and palliative domains; what they mean and what they represent.
  • Illustrate how hospice and palliative care overlap and complement each other.
  • Practice responses to difficult questions when discussing goals of care.
