Activity Summary

Sedated-and-paralyzed is a thing of the past. This concurrent session discusses how a large academic medical center has changed the culture around caring for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) patients by waking them up. Using internally developed evidence-based strategies, learn how to safely promote early mobility and decrease sedation while providing adequate pain management to achieve high-quality outcomes in an acutely ill patient population.

Objectives

  • Discuss detailed overview of an awake ECMO program and the culture shift needed to achieve a goal of discharge to home.
  • Identify evidence-based strategies to optimize achievement of high-quality outcomes for ECMO patients throughout the continuum of care.
  • Outline an early mobility protocol beginning with verticalization therapy and progressing to baseline mobility while remaining on ECMO.
