Activity Summary

The rapid increase in more sophisticated procedures performed outside of the traditional operating room has resulted in a shift from moderate sedation to anesthesia services, with as many as 50% of all anesthetic cases occurring in these non-OR anesthesia (NORA) locations. This is associated with increased procedural complexity and patient acuity. This session describes the incidence and implications of NORA, reviews case studies of anesthesia-related complications and discusses nursing priorities for this unique patient population. Pharmacology content = 30%

  • Discuss nursing priorities in the immediate post anesthesia period.
  • Describe one nursing interventions in the setting of an airway obstruction.
  • State the pharmacologic treatment for malignant hyperthermia.
