Activity Summary

The toll from unexpectedly losing a patient, being confronted by a challenging patient family or making a mistake is cumulative. Caring professionals can’t just shake it off; these emotional events go home with staff and can persist for days, months or even years. This session describes how U MATTER, a home-grown peer-to-peer support system, helps providers address unique stressors in real time and provides resources and support to help the traumatic process. This session empowers attendees to implement similar programming in their units.

Objectives

  • Examine how peer-to-peer support decreases staff burnout and mental health concerns, increases retention, and increases quality of care.
  • Outline training for U MATTER peer supporters, including communication strategies, active listening and self-care tools.
  • Discuss challenges of hospital-wide implementation due to competing job responsibilities and competing organizational priorities.
