Activity Summary

The impact of right-sided heart failure (RHF) in heart disease is well recognized. RHF is linked to hemodynamic instability and may not respond to standard treatments due to its unique pathophysiologic basis. Without intervention, a cycle of systemic hypotension, ischemia and dilation may lead to shock, organ failure and death. Early recognition is vital for improved outcomes. This presentation reviews RHF pathophysiology, causes, hemodynamic assessments and management of RHF. Case studies encourage critical thinking using a step-by-step approach to identifying and treating RHF.

Objectives

  • Describe physiologic changes associated with RHF.
  • Summarize clinical findings and the medical management of RHF.
  • Apply a standardized process to evaluate and treat RHF using case studies.
