Activity Summary

Open abdomen management in surgical patients presents unique challenges and complications. Direct peritoneal resuscitation (DPR) is an emerging adjunctive therapy showing promise in improving outcomes in these complex cases. This session provides a comprehensive overview of DPR, from its theoretical basis to practical implementation. Participants gain a deeper understanding of DPR's potential benefits, learn about the necessary setup and nursing care and explore real-world experiences with this novel therapy. Through case studies, attendees learn to identify patients who may benefit from DPR.

Objectives

  • Describe the role of DPR and its impact on systemic inflammatory response, clinical outcomes and potential complications.
  • Explain the set up required for direct peritoneal resuscitation using continuous peritoneal lavage with vacuum laparostomy.
  • Identify key components used to develop guidelines, procedures and education to support performing DPR.
