Activity Summary

More than a million hospital-acquired infections occur annually in the U.S. These infections increase morbidity and mortality in a vulnerable patient population and account for thousands of deaths, at a cost of billions of dollars for diagnostics and treatment. A partnership between the infection preventionist and bedside nursing team can improve bundle compliance and reduce infections. This presentation provides an approach that facilitates this relationship, with implementation strategies to achieve this goal. It covers challenges encountered during implementation.

Objectives

  • Define the impact of hospital acquired infections on patients in the U.S.
  • Describe development of a remote infection prevention model that is collaborative between the infection preventionist and bedside nurses.
  • Review implementation strategies used to facilitate a working relationship between the infection preventionist and bedside nurses.
