Activity Summary

This presentation focuses on strangulation as an injury that may be missed by nurses and other health professionals. The emphasis is on the correlation of this injury to intimate partner violence, intentional and nonintentional injury to self or others and pediatric and adolescent strangulation risks. Of particular concern for ICU teams is that the victims of strangulation do not always present with physical signs of injury. The purpose of the presentation is to enhance information on physical assessment signs and behavioral responses that assist ICU teams to heighten their awareness of this injury. The presentation reviews mechanisms of strangulation injury, as well as the related topics of accidental strangulation and so-called choking games.
