Activity Summary

Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is one of the top 10 primary diagnoses, by occurrence, of patients treated in the PICU and is often the first manifestation of type 1 diabetes mellitus in pediatric patients. In this session we explore evidence-based practices for how to best identify and manage critically ill pediatric patients in DKA. A case study review is employed to put these concepts into practice and discuss each step of the treatment algorithm. Let us analyze lab results, decipher classification, decide treatment and identify complications to better understand this highly impactful diagnosis.

Objectives

  • Identify the functions of a healthy pancreas.
  • Explain the causes, diagnosis and pathophysiology of DKA.
  • Describe best practices for management of DKA in a critically ill patient.
