Activity Summary

Adult sepsis screening tools perform poorly in obstetric patients. These patients are not cared for exclusively in obstetric units, so it is imperative nurses and APRNs have knowledge of obstetric sepsis, including the ability to identify it early and treat rapidly. Obstetric sepsis is defined and evidence-based screening tools are analyzed, with focus on the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative (CMQCC) two-step approach. Research-based treatment guidelines are detailed, as are practical strategies to implement a facility-wide obstetric sepsis screening and treatment protocol.

Objectives

  • Describe obstetric sepsis prevalence, risk factors, definition and population-specific clinical criteria for identification.
  • Examine evidence-based treatment for obstetric sepsis and identify steps to create an obstetric sepsis standard protocol in your facility.
  • Apply the CMQCC two-step obstetric sepsis screening tool to a case using case review format.
