Activity Summary

Pleural effusions occur in several disease processes. Therefore, one pleural effusion might not be like another. This session explores the pathophysiology behind why pleural effusions occur, the treatment options and monitoring parameters to optimize patient outcomes and quality of life. A case study approach is used to review chest x-rays, CT scans, fluid analysis, invasive procedures and intrapleural catheters, as well as nursing management to recognize and treat complications early. Updated (2023) guidelines are incorporated throughout the presentation.

Objectives

  • Explain the development of pleural effusions.
  • Describe several therapies employed to treat complicated pleural effusions.
  • Identify characteristics on an ultrasound, chest x-ray and CT scan that indicates the presence of pleural effusion.
