Activity Summary

Despite the growth in numbers of solid organ transplants and caring for a sicker and older patient population, most ICU nurses are unaware of new eligibility criteria and its prioritization of patients who are critically ill and in need of solid organ transplantation. Recognizing the difference between exclusion criteria (which is absolute) and program-specific information (which may be subjective) is important in that it empowers nurses to advocate for their patients and help reduce inequities in transplantation. Case studies, the interactive use of scoring tools and polling are used to promote active learning during the session.

Objectives

  • Differentiate eligibility criteria for solid organ transplantation.
  • Identify barriers to solid organ transplantation.
  • Describe technological advances in organ retrieval.
