Activity Summary

Providing the highest level of care to all patients is a standard of practice in the ICU. To achieve this adequately and in a timely way, constant assessments, noticing and intervening in subtle changes in patients remain a crucial part of this care provision. Limited literature and exposure to pigmented skin cause delays and mistakes. A step-by-step approach and key elements to look for in assessing pigmented skin are discussed in this presentation. This presentation utilizes contrasting images and case studies and highlights key elements to demonstrate effective assessments in pigmented skins.

Objectives

  • Explain recognition and assessment of clinical signs of deterioration and variance in different skin tones.
  • Describe major variations between disease presentations in pigmented skins and understand how these variations impact assessment.
  • Develop skills in using objective measures, hemodynamic monitoring and laboratory tests, to ensure comprehensive and accurate evaluation.
