Activity Summary

Elder abuse/neglect (EAN) has a significant impact on the morbidity and mortality of older adults, resulting in increased risk of hospitalization, long-term care placement, depression, development/exacerbation of major disability and death. EAN is also under-recognized by healthcare providers. This presentation provides an overview of EAN, strategies to improve its identification, specifically, the use of the Elder Abuse Suspicion Index ©, a brief validated screening tool and potential interventions if abuse/neglect is suspected.

Objectives

  • Discuss the prevalence and incidence of EAN, as well as risk factors for victims and perpetrators of EAN.
  • Describe evidence-based strategies for the identification and assessment of patients potentially experiencing EAN.
  • Consider the role of the forensic nurses in assessing and intervening in the setting of possible EAN.
