Activity Summary

Managing advanced cardiac failure due to cardiomyopathy or other causes is challenging. Care includes titrated inotropic and mechanical circulatory support (MCS) such as milrinone, V-A ECMO and implanted versus percutaneous MCS through recovery versus destination therapies. Optimal management addresses heart failure causation, extracardiac organ dysfunction and tailored pharmacological and device therapies. Advanced case studies integrate patient/family psychosocial care, pharmacological/mechanical support to recovery or transplant versus MCS as destination therapy, accenting the APRN role. Pharmacology content = 40%

Objectives

  • Analyze physiological effects of advanced cardiac failure and link with extracardiac organ dysfunction.
  • Integrate tailored pharmacological and device therapeutics in end-stage cardiac failure management through recovery versus destination therapies.
  • Plan ICU management of extracardiac organ dysfunction, titrating device support and selecting device versus transplant destination therapy.
