Activity Summary

Many of us may wish to have a magic wand to help diagnose a patient during a rapid response. In this advanced session, we review how early bedside point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) assessment can help differentiate shock and be utilized for goal-directed diagnosis. We review different types of shock (distributive, obstructive, cardiogenic, hypovolemic) and their clinical presentations, the Rapid Ultrasound for Shock and Hypotension (RUSH) protocol and how to utilize these findings to differentiate shock at the bedside.

Objectives

  • Identify different forms of shock.
  • Utilize POCUS for early, bedside diagnosis.
  • Describe goal directed care for the treatment of various shock states.
