Activity Summary

Chest pain is one of the most prevalent reasons for admission to the emergency department across the United States, second only to injury. This beginner session explores the assessment of adult patients with chest pain to accurately differentiate ischemic events from other cardiac and noncardiac causes of chest pain. In addition, gender, racial and socioeconomic-based disparities in acute coronary syndrome identification and subsequent care are presented. Case studies emphasize key components of chest pain presentation, diagnostic testing and ischemic event identification.

  • Identify key components of a comprehensive chest pain assessment.
  • Explain two cardiac and two noncardiac causes of chest pain other than acute coronary syndrome.
  • Describe the impact of gender, race and socioeconomic status in chest pain assessment, intervention and outcomes.
