Activity Summary

The nurse is provided with a review of the essentials of thorough patient assessment, including using all the senses to assure trends are captured. Test results are reviewed to show how even simple outliers can develop into larger issues over time if ignored. Case studies are reviewed and emergent situations are discussed, including how to differentiate appropriate treatment modalities. The importance of critical thinking and clear communication utilizing tools like SBAR are stressed when speaking to the physician, the care team and upper management, when needed.

Objectives

  • Examine the importance of accurate assessment, including abnormal values, while understanding the concept of normalization of deviation.
  • Identify health conditions, by systems, that may lead to failure, with early warning signs and symptoms and how to treat each effectively.
  • Discuss the critical thinking process and use of good communication skills to prevent further decline in the patient’s clinical status.
