Activity Summary

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common type of sustained cardiac arrythmia, affecting an estimated 2% to 3% of the population globally. Although lifestyle and risk modifications are the mainstay of management for prevention and progression, APRNs must be prepared to utilize a shared decision-making framework when applying the 2023 guidelines related to use of antiarrhythmic and anticoagulation therapy. For patients who fail rhythm control or for whom anticoagulant therapy cannot be tolerated, APRNs should understand the nuances associated with interventional therapies. Pharmacology content = 20%

Objectives

  • Discuss antiarrhythmic therapy utilized to maintain sinus rhythm.
  • Review indications and side effects of anticoagulation therapy, with review of validated clinical risk scores.
  • Identify patient eligibility for ablation therapy and/or left atrial appendage closure.
