Activity Summary

Join us for an essential session on managing temporary pacemakers in postcardiac surgery patients. This is an intermediate level discussion of how the nurse may utilize the pacemaker device to achieve optimum patient outcomes. Learn how to monitor and adjust pacemaker settings, recognize and address complications and provide comprehensive care. Enhance skills and confidence in temporary pacemaker management. The nurse interacts with scenarios presented during the course and uses the interactive polling tool to answers questions related to common dilemmas encountered with pacemakers.

Objectives

  • Identify the components of the cardiac conduction pathway and correlate how rhythm and rate affect cardiac output.
  • Explain how pacemakers sense the native rhythm and how the device inhibits itself or actively paces the heart based on this algorithm.
  • Analyze the various pacemaker malfunctions and provide the appropriate pacemaker intervention to correct the anomaly.
