Activity Summary

Infective endocarditis is a complication of intravenous substance use disorder and can affect any surface of the endocardium. Early recognition and treatment are imperative due to risk of morbidity and mortality. The purpose of this session is to present information regarding diagnosis and management of infective endocarditis in patients with this disorder. Nursing staff caring for this patient population learn about the holistic treatment plan. Case studies are used to illustrate the development and evaluation of an interdisciplinary plan of care for these patients.

  • Describe the clinical trajectory of infective endocarditis in patients with an intravenous substance use disorder.
  • Discuss evidence-based medical and surgical treatment modalities for infective endocarditis in this complex patient population.
  • Explain the importance of treating the substance use disorder in this vulnerable patient population.
