Activity Summary

Tissue hypoxia is often elusive and, if left unidentified, leads to deleterious effects. Traditional assessment parameters may be inadequate when occult hypoxia is present. Adequate perfusion management is paramount to avoid continued macrocirculation to microcirculation derangements. This intermediate-level session uses a hidden-tiger analogy to illustrate that the eye cannot see what the mind does not know, as the saying goes, in developing strategies for identifying occult tissue hypoxia.

Objectives

  • Explain the impact of macro- to microcirculation derangements on tissue perfusion.
  • Describe early interventions that improve tissue hypoxia identification and management.
  • Apply an evidence-based decision tree to assess macro- and microcirculation markers to optimize tissue perfusion.
