Activity Summary

From dehydration to sepsis, early recognition and intervention are essential to manage a child in shock. This session explores physical signs and diagnostic tests to identify a child in shock. Emphasizing sepsis, we cover pathophysiology and treatments for all shock types. Differences between adults and children are explored. Current trends (eg, less invasive monitoring) are introduced. Participants learn to recognize a decompensating child, react to changes and recommend treatments.

Objectives

  • Identify clinical signs and hemodynamic monitoring changes indicative of an acutely decompensating pediatric patient experiencing shock.
  • Describe medical and nursing interventions to manage pediatric (and adult) patients throughout the sepsis and shock continua.
  • Discuss changing trends in the recognition and management of pediatric shock.
