Activity Summary

Extreme hyperthermia presents significant challenges in critical care. If not managed appropriately, the neurological impact is devastating. While there is little variety in initial actions to manage temperature, very quickly the nurse must individualize care based on the cause of the extreme hyperthermia. Heat regulating difficulty, such as with stroke, is managed very differently from an induced hyperthermic syndrome such as malignant hyperthermia. A case-based format covers multiple causative processes resulting in extreme hyperthermia, the assessment and the management of this critically ill patient.

Objectives

  • Explain the differences between heat regulating difficulty experienced with heat stroke versus hypothalamus stroke.
  • Formulate an effective plan of care to manage extreme hyperthermia related to underlying physiology.
  • Compare selected drug-induced hyperthermic syndromes.
