Activity Summary

The unhoused (homeless) present to us in everyday life as we move about our cities and towns. Unique challenges are presented to us when they become our patients and, particularly, when it comes time for discharge. This presentation offers insight into some of the reasons people become unhoused and why many remain unhoused for long periods of time. The facilitator also offers suggestions as to how the nurse can help during hospitalization and with discharge planning. The presentation concludes with a discussion of ways we can help the homeless outside of the hospital.

Objectives

  • Identify reasons patients are unhoused—who they are, where they live, why they do not have a permanent home.
  • Define the needs and wants of those who are unhoused in relation to their medical concerns.
  • Discuss some of the challenges of working with those who are unhoused, with a focus on what the nurse can do to help.
