Activity Summary

Acute and critical care nurses use evidence every day when selecting patient interventions. Maybe it’s time to take the next step and consider publishing in your area of expertise. Publication may be part of your professional goals, but you may not know where to begin. Evidence appraisal and synthesis are components of every type of literature review; however, the methods for each varies. In this session, we discuss the process of evidence synthesis and dissemination from idea to publication and increasing knowledge of evidence appraisal, synthesis and presentation.

Objectives

  • Compare the different types of literature synthesis, their methodologies and considerations regarding rigor.
  • Distinguish evidence appraisal and assessment, including establishing level of evidence and strength of evidence.
  • Describe the publication process for literature syntheses from draft to print.
