Activity Summary

This is a foundational review of current guidelines for the indications, relative contraindications and common complications of veno-arterial ECMO for cardiogenic shock as a bridge to recovery, durable device, transplant or to decision. The role of the APRN in the cannulation process, circuit maintenance and patient management, including sedation, anticoagulation, weaning and hemodynamic optimization with inotropes, vasopressors and parenteral antihypertensives is discussed. Pharmacology content = 30%

Objectives

  • Review current guidelines for the indications and relative contraindications of ECMO for cardiogenic shock.
  • Describe the ARPN’s role in circuit-related management, including cannulation, optimizing flow and weaning therapy.
  • Explain management of ECMO—hemodynamic optimization with inotropes, vasopressors and parenteral antihypertensives and anticoagulation.
