Activity Summary

Session participants gain an understanding of the opioid crisis and how healthcare providers can contribute to adequate pain relief without increasing the potential for addiction after a hospitalization requiring acute pain relief. All opioids have a risk of respiratory depression due to their mechanism of action. Participants identify patients at high-risk for respiratory compromise and describe monitoring techniques to prevent respiratory depression. Pharmacology content = 75%

  • Define indications and benefits of using buprenorphine in critical care for pain control.
  • Examine pharmacotherapeutics, advantages, and challenges to using buprenorphine for acute pain.
  • Identify monitoring considerations for patients at high-risk of respiratory depression when receiving opioids.
