Activity Summary

Dissemination of successful improvement initiatives typically describes remarkable results. However, when performed locally, not all initiatives completely resolve the problem at hand, subsequently requiring ongoing improvement work. This discussion describes an 8-year journey to reduce CAUTI in a neurosurgical ICU. We focus on the project’s evolving PDSA (plan, do, study, act) cycles to change unit culture and beliefs surrounding CAUTI effectively, with sustainability over time. Strategies from this session can be leveraged for a wide variety of improvement work spanning from a unit to an organizational level.

Objectives

  • Apply the PDSA model of change for developing, implementing and evaluating unit-based initiatives.
  • Describe potential barriers to sustained practice changes and strategies for overcoming challenges.
  • Identify how to leverage characteristics of specific patient populations to tailor initiatives at a unit level.
